Inside The Mind of An Injured Athlete

I don't understand what happened today... I did not see this coming... this calf has been totally fine... not even a twinge since last year... I was wearing my compression socks... I totally should have massaged it with Biofreeze first... looks like there's a little bruise there... OMG what if I ripped it? Maybe that bruise is just b/c I've been massaging it too aggressively all day... I should probably stop stretching just in case... ARGH... things were going so well... I'm so bummed I missed my long run day... I never should have run that stupid 10K... hindsight is 20/20... is it time to ice again yet?... I wonder if Magic Man is going to be able to fix this... how long 'til I can run again?... Will it hurt to ride?... I might go crazy.

I am SORRY to read this! I know how you feel, I really do, these are not just empty words.
I hope it is just little nothing, that will go away with a day or two of rest. Take a good care of it!

Wishing, hoping, praying that it is nothing for you! I can sympathize with you.

Crap, I was just coming to see how you did! KN is going through something similar - total random out of nowhere calf problem. Crossing my fingers that this is a tiny minor set-back.

Ooooh, I'm so sorry! Keep us posted and we'll all cross fingers that Magic Man really works his magic. I wonder what's causing calf problems? Just googled it and looks like sudden increase in volume will do it. Maybe Tim's workin' you too hard? :-) Rest up!

@ Jennifer... my mileage has been rather steady for a while at ~40miles/week... this week would have been higher but I missed out on ~10 planned miles b/c of the calf. In good news, Magic Man says it is not torn (phew!) and he went a long way toward loosening it up tonight... and helping me calm down about it, which may have been the bigger challenge. ;)

:( It will be okay though - because it always is! Take care of yourself!!

So sorry about this Michelle. I don't think there is anything you did to cause this. I hate when injuries happen out of the blue, and there is no logical explanation for them! Glad the Magic Man's magic is working. This calf thing will be over FOR GOOD soon!!!

Aw man... I am so sorry to hear of your injury. Glad nothing is torn.

Hang in there. I always feel that the stress of an injury makes me appreciate it even more when I am healthy.

I loved the title of this post and could write a novel on the subject. So sorry to hear that the calf is acting up again. I really hope that you are able to figure out what is going on and put this injury for good.

Oops, I think I just wrote that last comment under my husband's name. It was really me, though!

So sorry to hear about this. Injuries suck! (hello ITB).

I see in your comments you got to the Magic Man and he was able to help some. No tear is a good start!

I am so sorry. Having a suffered a completely unexpected calf injury I wish I had sage advice but I've got nothing. In the end what did the trick for me was lots of hip and glute strengthening because it was weaknesses in those areas causing my issue, but I'm afraid I've got no advice short term for you.

Nooo! Hope you are feeling better today!

ugh...you'll be fine and you'll figure it out, you just need to calm down so you don't totally stress your whole system out in the process. fingers are crossed that it bounces back quickly!
