Head In The Sand

So this morning Nalani and I were sitting on the side of the pool trying to convince ourselves to get in and get wet. We felt kinda cold so getting wet wasn't so appealing. (It was ~75 degrees out and the water was ~80.) We made mental note to remember that feeling of 'cold' because surely we are going to have a new understanding of 'cold' next week.

I told Nalani that I just had my head in the sand... I am in total and complete denial about what we will experience in CdA... so she found this picture and posted it on my FB wall. At least she and I are in this thing together.

Just put on your wetsuit and submerge yourself (face included) in an ice bath. That should acclimate you pretty well :-)

You guys are so funny. The weather forecast looks SO much nicer than the year i spectated up there and it rained most of the marathon.

Get in the water everyday until race day and before the race on race day. The first day I thought there was no way I could swim for that length but each day it got better. Everybody told me that before CDA and I didn't believe them at first but it worked out. You swim fast so you'll be out of the water in no time. My fingers wouldn't stay together on lap two they were so cold, but they didn't hurt. I hear some people tape their fingers together but I don't know if it's legal or if it would mess up your stroke. Good Luck.

I once did a super cold iron distance race and what got me was how cold I was on the bike (the temp was 39 at the start). The ocean was cold too, but that didn't bother me nearly as much. Good luck and make sure you pack warm clothes for the bike so you have options on race day.

I've been reading your blog for ages. I grew up in Hawaii and am new (compared to you) to triathlon. I totally get the cold water thing! The ice bath suggestion in wetsuit is great. Also swim when you arrive. And a tip where I live now (the UK) is to pour a warm water bottle (just from the hot water faucet) into your suit pre race to create the seal.

You'll do great Michelle! Pomaika'i!!

You'll be fine, the lake is now at 61°, you've got other things to worry about like pulling me along when you go by me on the bike, got it? Legal of course.
