Fairly Active On The Weekends...

We had some fun house guests this weekend.... Scott's aunt and uncle came to visit from San Diego and stayed with us last night. Moana had a ball with them and of course loved all the extra attention. It was almost as good as a visit from grandma! :)

Anyway, it was the first time I'd met his aunt and uncle so of course our conversations involved a lot of 'get to know you' talk... They asked lots of questions about my training and racing of course, which is always an interesting subject for those who are not exactly familiar with the sport. Yesterday the conversation went something like this:

"You biked how far this morning?"

"And then you went running? After you already rode your bike??"

It's funny because these workouts we do on Saturday morning are just completely normal for us, but when I say them out loud, to people who don't know the sport, I almost feel ridiculous. At one point this morning I was chatting with his aunt and said something about how we are 'fairly active on the weekends...' She was like, Um, I would say so. Lol.

I did not tell them how far I was running today. Maybe some things are just better kept to ourselves... But I can tell you guys, right? You guys understand. That's why you read this blog, right? So how's this... 14+ hilly miles... I felt average... just plugging along doin' my thang... checked my watch for my split at the turn around and saw I was there about a minute faster than ever before... cool... ran home solidly... never felt like I was pushing it but hit my watch at the end to see a negative split and a total time that was a full 3 minutes faster than I've ever done this run before. Now THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! Sweet. :))

2 weeks til Honu.

yeah baby! That's what I'm talking about! I LOVE to hear people's training schedule. I actually asked a few good triathletes what they did today just so I could live vicariously through them. But yes, we are a rare breed and most pple don't understand (including my inlaws which we have to sort of hide my workouts to esp during pregnancy!). I hate it has to be that way...that we have to be secretive for fear of sounding weird... but until it's super mainstream, we'll just feel 'odd' and that's alright with US!

Yay!
Funny, I did my little running by feel experiment this weekend and ran negative splits, not super fast, but given that I am not training, pretty awesome pace. This running by feel might be catching on to me! Can't wait for Honu!

My friends think I am psycho. "You did what? How far? And then you ran?!" ha.

I get "Oh, triathlon...that's like a marathon, right?" Ummm...yeah, like steeple chase is part of the decathlon. Triathlon is A LOT more fun than a marathon by my experience. I remember though when I was preparing for my first Oly a few years ago and read some of the training for 1/2 IMs and thought "Are you kidding me?" - but I signed up. Now, if I'm not doing that on the weekends in prep for an event, I know I'm in trouble. Just goes to show how adaptable we are AND how ADDICTING TRIATHLON IS!

Congrats on a great run! =)

So funny - the most I have run is a 1/2 marathon and people think it's weird/amazing when I say I ran 6 for a training run. I should send them over here!! Congrats on the speedy pace!

I love talking about training to people who have no clue what goes into it! And I love the, "you run marathons? How far is that?" LOL!
Nice job on the run! Yayyy for making some great progress!

Sounds like a totally normal weekend to me, but I know what you mean. When you say it out loud to someone not involved with long distance racing, it sounds nuts. Even my husband laughs when I tell him I "only" have a 3 hour bike w/ a 1 hour transition run.

The training does sound a bit ridiculous if you aren't an endurance athlete! That must have been a funny conversation. You sound so fit right now and your training is going amazing.

Yes, and even single sport people give you weird looks, after a team ride, they ask what are you doing tonight, "well a swim and weights"

"your going to swim after this ride!!!"

lol yes its normal to us, not to anyone else.

Nice job on the hilly run! You are ready for Honu!

The funniest is when people at work ask about my training. They think I am certifiably nuts!
