Call me a romantic, but I always assumed the waters off the coast of the Big Island were free from sharks. For whatever reason, even when I might have a bit of fear of swimming alone in ocean water elsewhere, swimming at the pier or at Hapuna always seemed totally benign (like a giant aquarium, right??) and I wouldn't hesitate to jump right in. And I probably I still won't when I am there next week, even though the
shark sitings in both places have come one after another this year...

I have a very active imagination when I'm doing open water ocean swimming. I always think I see big set of teeth coming up from the bottom toward me as I'm swimming. Thus, I always have to swim with others in the ocean, it keeps me distracted when I see others around me. And knowing that the shark has other choices to chomp on other than me. Am getting myself ready for an epic 3 day training sesh.
Scary! My biggest worries are usually getting hooked by a random fishermen not paying attention ;)
and that my dear is why you are braver than I!
yikes, be careful! But i know you know what to do and what not to do!
Hey, i thought of you at my finish. I raised my hands over my head:) I felt ok so i could do that, wish i had a pic of that!
OMG...sharks freak me out!! I'm happy here in CO just swimming with the catfish..ha ha!
See, this is why I prefer lakes. Even then, I have an irrational fear of lake monsters. Too many horror movies as a kid.
Yeah, I don't know what it is, but I have never really been afraid to be eaten by a shark, although I should because it might hurt. Sharks have very large teeth. Ouch.
Be careful out there. If you are about to race, I suggest pouring honey over your competitions backs as the sharks may defer to the sweeter tasting humans.
